Mirrors for Commonweal Gallery

This collection of mirrors was designed for the inaugural opening of Philadelphia-based Commonweal Gallery’s new showroom in the Old Kensington neighborhood. The series marked the first steps in revitalizing my studio practice after a six-month hiatus, and in this instance I was most compelled by objects designed with digital precision and crafted by hand. By harnessing the precision of the CNC router in tandem with the unpredictability of wood, the collection expresses a curiosity toward cryptic symbolism and expressive home décor. Speaking generally, mirrors provide both a reflection of the viewer and a frame in which they are contained - a box which contextualizes the onlooker. I found great joy in playing with this relationship and exploring the limits of my fabrication process in the pursuit of rare shapes.

The mirror series is supported by Spontaneous Lamps No. 13 and 14, as well as a clock produced using the negative space leftover from the CNC machining process.
